Functional Testing
What is it and how can it improve my health outcomes?
As a Nutritional Therapist, I have access to ordering functional tests for you. Functional tests are laboratory assessments that examine how the body’s systems are actually functioning, rather than relying solely on symptoms or general dietary guidelines. Instead of guesswork, they use measurable biological markers to identify imbalances, deficiencies, or dysfunctions. This allows for highly targeted and personalised nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.
These tests typically involve non-invasive samples such as blood, urine, stool, or saliva. They evaluate key areas of health, including nutrient status (e.g. vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids), digestive function (such as gut microbiome balance, enzyme activity, and inflammation), hormone levels (cortisol, thyroid hormones, and sex hormones), and metabolic processes (including blood sugar regulation and detoxification pathways).
Functional testing can also screen for food sensitivities, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and markers associated with conditions like fatigue, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, and immune dysfunction. By identifying root causes rather than simply managing symptoms, I can provide precise interventions — such as specific dietary changes, targeted supplementation, and lifestyle adjustments — tailored to the individual’s unique biology. I work with leading trusted laboratories Genova Diagnostics and Invivo Healthcare.
In addition, SNP (genetic) testing, such as that offered by companies like LifeCode GX, analyses small variations in your DNA that can influence how your body responds to food, nutrients, and lifestyle factors. In simple terms, it helps explain why one approach may work well for one person but not for another. This kind of testing can highlight how your body naturally handles areas such as energy production, inflammation, and detoxification, allowing for even more personalised and practical recommendations that suit your unique genetic makeup.
Alot of the samples can be collected at home (some require a simple blood test). Samples are then sent to the lab for testing. Once I recieve the results from the lab then I carefully interpret your test results and translate them into clear, easy-to-understand information that we can talk through at your next appointment. This helps you see the direct connection between your lab findings and the symptoms you have been experiencing, making the recommendations feel relevant and manageable rather than overwhelming.
The result is a more time efficient and effective path to improved health outcomes. You receive advice based on objective data rather than a trial-and-error approach.
